Governing Board
The
Governing Board is a decision making body that assists in
defining policy guidelines and operating procedures to meet the
educational needs of all students. If you have a concern about:
school rules/policy (as they apply to all students); field
trips; or school board policy, please feel free to talk to a
governing board representative; write us a letter and leave it
in our box in the main office; send us an email at
dorsetgb@yahoo.ca ; or
attend a meeting and ask a question in the public question
period. We would love to hear from you! Please note that the
Governing cannot address issues pertaining to a specific child
but rather looks at the well being of all of our students.
Governing Board News
The school year is in full swing, and I would like to give you a
brief update as to what has been going on with your Governing
Board.
Firstly I am pleased to share that our Major School Change Brief
has been submitted to the Council of Commissioners and we have
been granted permission to speak in front of the Council on
Wednesday November 18, at Westwood Junior High. After the
public hearings the Council will deliberate, and release its
decisions on December 21. Their decisions will relate to how
French language instruction is delivered and any changes to the
use of school space. Any changes will effect the 2010-2011
school year. At this time the issue of rezoning is not really
going to be considered due to the delays in the off island
school construction. If you would like to read the brief we have
submitted, you will find it on the Dorset website. I would like
to thank the members of our major School Change Committee
Isabelle Langelier, Lesley Pahl Sibthorpe, Ann Tellier, Scott
Taylor, Ann Cumyn, Natasha Gentille, and Adrian Geller for their
time and efforts. I would also like to thank the many members
of our community who filled in the survey, came out to the
meetings, shared their opinions, concerns, and reminded us all
what we cherish about Dorset. Your feedback was so valuable in
the construction of our brief.
Beyond Major School Change the Governing Board has been looking
at issues that impact our school on a daily basis. Of note is
our recent initiative to track and examine the financial
requests the school makes of the parents. We are sensitive to
the fact that fundraising, class trips, fieldtrips all add up.
We are also aware of the great value of experiential education
and are grateful for the supplies we can purchase as a result of
fundraising. As a result we are monitoring the requests and hope
to maintain a reasonable balance.
If you have any questions or concerns about issues that impact
the school as a whole please feel free to raise them to our
Governing Board. To submit concerns in writing either put a
letter in the Governing Board Box in the main office, email
dorsetgb@yahoo.ca. or speak
to a member of the governing board.
Sincerely,
Patty Levell
Chair, Dorset Governing Board.
